Royal Navy down to 11 destroyers and frigates with no attack submarine available

In 1982, following Argentina’s invasion of the Falkland Islands, the United Kingdom assembled an expeditionary force of more than 120 ships, including around 50 destroyers, frigates and other major surface combatants. This fleet was able to transport troops, aircraft, fuel and ammunition several thousand kilometres from the British Isles, while continuing operations after the loss of four escorts. In August 2026, the Royal Navy has only 11 destroyers and frigates left to fulfil its standing missions and protect its two aircraft carriers.

Royal Navy: 11 escorts for standing missions

The number of British escorts still stood at 50 in 1990, before falling to 23 in 2010 and then 19 in 2015. The retirement of HMS Iron Duke and HMS Richmond, confirmed by the British Defence Investment Plan published in June 2026 and carried out on 13 July, reduced this fleet to six Type 45 air-defence destroyers and five Type 23 anti-submarine frigates. No replacement vessel from the Type 26 or Type 31 classes had yet entered service at that point.

With these 11 vessels, the Royal Navy now fields fewer surface combatants than the Italian, Indian, Japanese or South Korean navies. Its force structure is becoming comparable to that of the Spanish naval forces, which operate six Santa María-class F-80 anti-submarine frigates and five Álvaro de Bazán-class F-100 air-defence vessels. The French Navy, for its part, retains eight FREMM multi-mission frigates, two Horizon air-defence frigates and five La Fayette-class stealth light frigates.

Common Combat Vessels replace the Type 83 destroyer in Royal Navy planning

The UK MoD has dropped the Type 83 destroyer in favor of Common Combat Vessels as hubs for uncrewed systems, creating a transition with unresolved operational and industrial risks.

An operation comparable to the Falklands campaign would today make it possible to assemble, at best, only six or seven British destroyers and frigates around a single aircraft carrier, depending on the state of maintenance and crew availability. This estimate assumes that vessels would be drawn from the Royal Navy’s other commitments. Nor does it guarantee the presence of an Astute-class nuclear-powered attack submarine to protect the carrier strike group, monitor opposing forces and gather intelligence ahead of the fleet.
