Burrows shares two children with her ex-wife, screenwriter Alison Balian, and during an interview with the Circle This podcast with Andrea Bendwald, Burrows opened up about their nonbinary child and her journey with understanding their identity. “I’m the parent now of a non-binary child,” Burrows began. “I’m in a state of learning all the time about how they want to be addressed, what their philosophies are on the world, which are already very developed, aged just twelve.” Burrows credits her openness to her upbringing by a primary school teacher and equal rights activist mother. “I was always drawn to very strong individuals, as most of us are. I’m not unusual in that, but I remember thinking I had the right to love who I wanted to love,” she explained. “My mum gave me that sense of self… And I’ve lived by that. And she said, 'You know what, hon, he's kind of both.'" Davidson stressed that it was important for him to hear it put in simplistic terms like that as a kid, because a perfect understanding wasn't the point. [People] do need that [kind of] representation. “As our children show up, it is our job to believe them when they tell us who they are and not impose our dreams, hopes, fears, and desires on them. “It’s our job to be loving, compassionate, protective guides for our children, but their lives are their lives and we have to respect that. We do not believe in any kind of shaming for existing. That is bizarre, cruel, [and] harmful. “So yeah, we’re gonna post our family, we’re going to live out loud, we’re going to love out loud, and we’re going to speak out loud and lead in however each situation calls for us to be leaders when things are not where they should be,” said Union. But it is a thing and a lot of people do need an example.
